Day 86 – Shelved
Today, at last, I got around to re-building my garage shelves, so my tools finally have a proper “home”. It turned out to be a project of the kind “assemble IKEA stuff without instructions and with some parts missing”, but the results were good. Though the angle brackets to connect the shelves to the wall were MIA, I used different ones that I had on hand, with screws I happened to have around. The majority of the weight is carried by the shelves’ L-feet anyway — I am quite sure I wouldn’t want to trust an American-style drywall to carry any serious weight
.

You could hold a little more weight with a wing toggle anchor, but still really not that much. I wouldn’t rely on that for shelves. Need to catch a stud.
What I have yet to understand is how you can buy a random shelf without knowing just how far the studs are apart. Otherwise you can hit one stud, but not another?
Kits require you know where studs are and knowing it will work where you want it. Otherwise you need to buy the shelves and then whatever bracket system you want separately and do it yourself. May involve cutting shelves etc. Sadly not simple. Hence Americans tend to shun shelves attached to walls in favor of freestanding units. It’s a lot easier. But much less efficient for storing stuff.
