We monitor user reports on Twitter and company announcements to automatically detect service trouble. Crowdsourcing often gives more reliable information than a ping test – for example, when a site is responding but shows an error page (like the fail whale).

Awesome. I love these sites- www.istwitterbroken.com is another one, except they have a robot managing the site to figure out if twitter is down or even "sort of" broken.

I’m getting a “no” from istwitterdown.com, both on August 6 and 7, when Twitter seems to be suffering its denial of service attacks. Does it really say “yes” for you?
