Firefox PDF Extension for Mac OS X

Jean Pierre pointed out a fabulous little extension for Firefox 3 on OSX:

The firefox-mac-pdf extension embeds PDF files right in the browser, so you don’t have to download them, open them with Preview.app and remove the file off your desktop afterwards. It works much like Acrobat, except it uses OSX’s built-in PDFkit.

That’s definitely an extension I’d like to see on AMO.

  1. Sweet. I tend not to vote to move stuff into the core much, but I would put a vote for this.

  2. I had the same reaction when I saw this: this should be in core. But then again, security can be one of the concerns.

  3. Nice extension, but please don’t move it to the core. We shouldn’t be encouraging more PDF use.

  4. Great!! I hate the way PDF:s work on macs.

  5. This is Safari parity. It really should be core on the Mac. (it’d be awesome if it were default on Linux too, were it not for the retarded decision by the Evince people to let someone code a browser plugin in GSOC and then reject it once it was finished.)

  6. Man, this should be integrated in the Mac version. It’s amazing, and I see no reason to not do it.

  7. I’ve been meaning to blog about this all week.

It should really be included similar to how java embedded plugin is included. Would really improve the Firefox experience on a Mac IMHO.

  8. Robert: I agree. If we were to include Acrobat, or so, I’d be against it. However, using what your OS provides you with is a different story. In a way, it’s like using native form widgets on the OS you are on.

What annoyed me the most is not even that I had to open my online PDF files with Preview.app before, but that I had to delete all these files off my Desktop afterwards. When you look up bus schedules, restaurant menus and similar stuff online, you get a bunch of randomly names PDF files that you have to individually look at again and delete later.

  10. Using this plugin, PDF’s not zoomable like the Schubert PDF Browser Plugin.

  11. I stand corrected. Zooming is possible via contextual menus.

  12. Pressing Cmd+Plus/Minus will zoom in/out as well.
