Apple (Allegedly) Fixes Leopard Keyboard Bug
Yesterday, Apple released a system update that is supposed to fix the severe “keyboard unresponsive” bug in OS X Leopard:
With hardly 800K in size, the patch is a lightweight that could have a big influence. If that’s not the right place to use the word of the year, where else: W00t.
I just installed it and so far, the keyboard works fine, but of course I haven’t sent the box to sleep yet, so by now I can’t tell yet if the patch actually fixed the bug. Of course, the reboot the update asked for promptly resulted in a kernel panic (great start), but luckily, another reboot went through without problems.
If you like, please let me know in the comments if the patch worked for you or not. Good luck!
(Thanks Justin, Jean Pierre and Marc, who all told me about the update being available.)

How does one install the update when the keyboard is unresponsive? I am unable to enter the admin password to start the update. My keyboard does NOT come back after a reboot and I have tried the PRAM reset etc. I have a bootcamp partition on the machine and I can boot into that and run Vista just fine – but not Leopard. I have been running Leopard for awhile now and this just happened today. Any suggestions anyone?

Hmm. I did download and install this update. And my keyboard never freezes on me *cross fingers*
But.. I’m just wondering about one more thing about the keyboard, and hoping you might know about it.
When I change to another window and try typing something, it (most of the time) leaves out the 1st letter that I type. Is this what is called “unresponsive”? I’m not sure if this is actually a problem because of the Leopard or because of the hardware.

I installed this update. Worked fine the first few days, ceased working from then on. Incredibly frustrating.

I am having the unresponsive keyboard problem on a G5 Desktop running 10.5.2. happens even when the computer has never been asleep. switching between applications seems to wake the keyboard up.

I’m having this problem on several of our 2007 macbooks at my school — just started within the past month — and we’re running Tiger – so I think it must not be software related. I’ve read there’s a possible problem with a cable connecting the keyboard to something — anyone else heard that? very frustrating for the kids. sometimes if they keep pushing the power button to shut down, then restart, the keyboard again becomes responsive — sometimes they have to do this 10 times!
