Es war mal wieder Zeit für ein neues Avatar. Wer erkennt mich?

Today I was connecting a second USB harddrive to my NSLU2.

What you get is a few interesting effects, among them device IDs (/dev/sda, sdb…) changing depending on the order in which you attach the drives. Plus, I added a USB hub, which makes the device names change anyway.

The solution for the crazily jumping dev nodes is the udev system, which is part of Linux for quite a while now, but I never really had a need to play with it yet. But the howto is pretty nice and easy to apply.

Still, a few notes:

• The SYSFS{whatever} rules support wildcards, so that you don’t have to write the whole descriptor if you don’t want to. For example, “Max*” instead of “Maxtor 6” works totally fine. — That’s especially useful since SYSFS{model} descriptors often seem to be filled up with a couple of spaces at the end.
• Some (all?) USB hard drives in fact don’t consider themselves to be USB devices. So in this case defining BUS=="usb" will not result in any device links to be created at all. I had to define BUS=="scsi" instead. You should look at the udevinfo output as suggested in the “writing udev rules” howto, it will tell you exactly what setup is necessary for your device/drive configuration.

Sieh an! Gerade habe ich meine Briefwahlunterlagen für den Baden-Württembergischen Landtag im Briefkasten gefunden.

Zuvor hatte ich mir die Wahlkarte, die natürlich an mein heimisches Domizil verschickt wurde, durchfaxen lassen, und die Daten darauf in ein Webformular auf der Webseite der Stadt Ettlingen eingegeben.

Da nicht einmal ein Eingabefeld für das Land vorgesehen war, war ich mir eigentlich ziemlich sicher, dass entweder die Anfrage nicht bearbeitet werden kann oder ich aus irgendeinem sonstigen obskuren Grund keine Unterlagen in die USA geschickt bekomme.

Doch, Respekt: Der Brief kam sogar relativ schnell hier an. Interessanterweise mit dem Stempel eines lokalen Fahrradkuriers, der die Strecke aber wahrscheinlich eher nicht mit Muskelkraft zurückgelegt hat.

Und zu allem Überfluss macht man es mir auch noch relativ leicht, das Kreuzchen zu machen: Diesmal habe ich nur die Wahl zwischen sechs verschiedenen Kandidaten. Da war die Kommunalwahl “ein bisschen” komplizierter.

Ich bin noch nicht sicher, ob ich es im selben Umschlag zurücksenden soll: Er ist so “liebevoll” mit dem handschriftlichen Hinweis “Air Mail” versehen, dass die blauen USPS-Aufkleber, die ich hier auf meine Auslandspost klebe damit natürlich kaum mithalten können.

All der Aufwand für ein kleines Kreuzle – aber so simmer ebbe im Ländle

Be warned, it’s not for the faint of heart. Now that’s what I call a nightmarish soundtrack – hopefully nobody sues them because of the emotional pain when hearing harddrives crash
